Today is Tax Day. I got mine mailed yesterday. There weren't any big surprises. I did OK with it. It helps to have a simple estate, a dog house and two blankets. And my dog's always hogging them.
I was just looking at President Obama's tax forms online. His definitely look complicated enough that I would want a professional to help me with them. And I see he had a tax company do them. If my income, like his, ever goes over $5 million, I'll be sure to get someone.
Just looking at them, they seem fairly simple and straightforward, except for all the additional forms they had to fill out. The first pages and the SE schedule look about like mine have looked in recent years, just bigger numbers. I see one of his expenses was only $12, so I can relate to that.
A lot of the president's high income was from book sales. Memo to self: Write bestselling book this year.
The other thing that struck me about the president's tax forms was that everything was typed. That really makes them look good.

A Whole Year Since The Election
2008 was a killer for me, all the waiting, all the political suffering. It didn't seem like we'd ever get to the election. Then we finally, finally did. And now it's been an entire year since!
How is President Obama doing? I think he's doing pretty much OK. I would prefer a more out and out liberal agenda, and more of an out and out killer instinct to get it. I don't like the idea of pussyfootin' around with political enemies when you're President of the United States.
I think this health-care thing could've been better. And it could've been done sooner. Maybe not, because I'm not really there to know. I tend to think the president has more power than he uses. I imagine he could've twisted some arms off and broken some knee caps, politically speaking.
As far as the Democrats in Congress, I don't like it that they're going a hundred different ways, always in rebellion over one thing or another. I think a surer way to bury the Republicans is to govern as Democrats with good Democratic principles. And among those principles I don't mean shooting yourself in the foot while no sense of direction.
Now it's election day again, and the Republicans have a mixed bag. They're going to spin it as a big night for them, that Obama's bad and the Republicans are good. It doesn't really mean that, but just wait and see.
What happens in 2010, I'm hoping we get our act together and crush them. But if 2009 is any guide, I don't know that it will happen.

President Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize (Could've Been ME)
I was very happy to hear President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. To be perfectly honest, I didn't even know he was a candidate for it.
This is the way the election in '08 should've gone. Instead of nail biting for two years in advance, just wake up one day and it's over.
Winning the Nobel prize is like an eclipse. Some only happen every 500 years but they don't tell you about it till the day before.
I think one of those 500 year eclipses, they ought to tell you a couple years in advance so you can get a decent telescope.
Am I just supposed to have a fancy telescope in the garage on the off chance that the 500 years is about up?
Anyway. This was two extraordinary pieces of news before I was even awake. The Nobel prize and NASA shooting the moon.
May as well go back to bed. Nothing else can possibly happen.
The moon probe was called something like the CENTAUR 5000. They should have named it the ALICE KRAMDEN 1956.
As in "Pow, ZOOM."
So, congratulations on two fronts. To the Moon for being such a good sport. And to President Obama for skunking everyone else for the prize.
When you're a candidate for the PEACE PRIZE you have to be a good sport. You can't be blocking and tackling others who are in your way.
You have to have a Chip 'n' Dale attitude: "No, you first, I insist." --- "No, no, by all means, you lead the way."
As for myself, if I could be a candidate for the Peace Prize, I'd be very mellow in public, but clawing like a tiger behind the scenes.
They'd be saying, "Mr. Kundalini, you have prevailed." I'd be in my study, swishing a snifter of cognac, saying, "Exxxxcelllent...."
Say that 5 times fast, "Swishing a snifter."
I understand there's a cash prize that goes with it. Which of course I wouldn't be interested in having.

Obama A Boor? No!
Peggy Noonan, who always seems like she's a bit uptight -- like she's half lost in her own thoughts about her brilliance -- reportedly called President Obama a "boor" or "boorish."
How did he get this terrible dis? Because he's making the circuit, talking up his health care plan, etc. That's all it takes? (Wow, I wonder what she said about President Bush when he was constantly in our face about "the terr'ists" and destroying Social Security. She probably thought that was the height of refinement.)
As I recall, though, President Obama campaigned on the idea that he was going to reform the health care system. And, whether snooty Peggy likes it or not, it seems like it'd be very irresponsible to not at least be making a credible effort to get it accomplished. The fact is, the Congress has been obstinate, to say the least, and the Republican opposition, in particular, has been, dare I say it?, boorish.
I know what boorish means. The Daily Kos diarist gave one official definition as "a rude, awkward, or ill-mannered person." Peggy thinks the president is that? He seems like one of the nicest guys on the planet! He's definitely nice to the Republicans, bending over backwards because of their many demands.
I think he probably should be a little more rude to the Republicans. But he's not rude now or ill-mannered, and he's certainly not awkward.
What a strange thing for Peggy to say. Or maybe not. We know her. The Democrats can do no right, the Republicans no wrong.

You Might Be A Bad Pastor If...
The Secret Service interviewed that idiotic pastor who gave a sermon in his church (!) on "Why I Hate Barack Obama" and prayed that Mr. Obama would die and go to hell.
It also turns out that the guy who showed up at the president's event in Arizona the other day with a gun goes to this pastor's church. So I'd say, if you're looking for a church, it pays to check around!
Apologies to Jeff Foxworthy, but here goes:
You might be a bad pastor if the Secret Service has to interview you for seeking the death of the President of the United States.
This guy is a couple testaments short of a full Bible.

Birther Mantra -- "Yes We Can!"
I want to try something with a slogan we all remember from the '08 campaign.
"Yes we can." Let's say it over and over, "Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can!"
Whenever you say something over and over very soon it starts to run together and by now you're not pronouncing the words clearly. You can see how this could work with "Yes we can!" We used to do it when trying to say "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers" or "Rubber baby buggy bumpers," definite tongue twisters.
With "Yes we can," when slurred together and then separated out, you can see numerous permutations. "Yes we can! Yeah we can! Ya we kin!" And then to take it a step further, if you were saying it for 20 minutes straight, let's say, the rhythm could fluctuate and you wouldn't even necessarily be saying the "Ya" word first, but it'd be out of its normal order.
This could happen so much, with such mispronouncing, that eventually you could be saying, "Can Ya We! Kin Ya We!" To the point that it spells out "Ken-ya-we!" At first it reminds you of Kanye West, but look at that again!
It says, "Kenya We."
Now, I remember years ago when I was in grade school studying some of the various Kenyan languages, going for extra credit. The other kids were out exploding 2-liter Coke bottles with Mentos (This was the mid-'60s. Check it out, there's no anachronisms here), but I was inside studiously poring over African language websites.
And as I recall, and I confess I'm a little rusty, having not spoken Kenyan since winning the Kenyan version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" in 1981, the first person plural can always be translated as a first person singular when expressing someone's occupation, birthplace, town, or country of residence. (Instead of individualism, which we consider normal, in Kenya they relate more in a dyadic way*.) So we in English would say, "I am from America." But Kenyan grammar leaves out the "to be" verb form, with the words "Kenya We" then usually translating, "I am from Kenya."
Was Barack Obama trying to tell us something during the campaign?
-------------------------
* "A dyadic personality is one who simply needs another continually in order to know who he or she really is," Bruce J. Malina writes in "The New Testament World -- Insights from Cultural Anthropology," John Knox Press, 1981, p. 55.
As an aside, ask yourself, when is the last time you saw a Kenyan by himself? Then ask yourself, Isn't Barack Obama always surrounded by other people?

Is President Obama leading?
Or is Congress kicking his butt?

Birth Certificates
The idiots are saying Barack Obama doesn't have a birth certificate and we haven't seen it. But we've all seen it and we've all heard the Hawaiian authorities saying That's it.
The irony is President Obama's birth certificate is the only presidential birth certificate I recall having seen. I didn't see George W. Bush's or Bill Clinton's or George (the 1st) Bush's or Ronald Reagan's or Jimmy Carter's or Gerald Ford's or Richard Nixon's or any of the other presidents before them.
Maybe Gerald Ford should've been ineligible since whatever name he had on his birth certificate (his name wasn't Gerald Ford at birth) was different than what he ended up with. But of course that's just psycho talk, as Ed says.
So what a weird situation. The idiots say we haven't seen Obama's when ... that's the only one I have seen.

Bo Obama
The Obamas got their dog and his name is Bo!
Bo, easy to spell, easy to remember.
Reminds me of the old commercial that had a song that went like this [clearing my throat]:
I got a dog, his name is Bo!
And he's got the High Pro glow.
Healthy, High Pro glow,
Energy, the High Pro glow.
I would guess it was for a dog food called "High Pro." Whether they still make it or not, I don't know. But it's really something that I could remember it, huh?

Obama's Poll Numbers
Somewhere today I saw that President Obama's poll numbers remain high and the Republicans' remain low. I'm glad.
Let the Republicans continue to shoot themselves in the foot, whatever. They're aligning themselves with all kinds of radicals, like the Fox News crew, etc. I saw a video of David Schuster, MSNBC, where he was talking with a guy from the NY Times and a guy from some gun lobbying organization.
The gun guy was talking for the wacko side of life, that Obama is trying to take away everyone's guns, etc. Which aligns them exactly with this cop killer from a few days ago who supposedly did it because he believed the idiocy that Obama is trying to take away everyone's guns. But everyone, you see, needs their guns because ... I don't know ... they might need to make a vain last stand against the repressive government. Good luck with that. As long as you don't have tanks and bombers, who do you think will win?
Plus, anyway, it's not even going to happen. There's such a thing as paranoia going too far, and that's all this is. Oh, and the Republicans trying to score points with radical fringe groups because ... they think that's the road back to political dominance? Someone throw them an anvil in case they drop this one!
I actually own guns and believe in the right to own guns. But I'm not stupid enough to think my guns are enough to take on an oppressive government. Which we don't have. Duh. It's all such vain nonsense.

Obama Fried Chicken
There's some controversy about a place called Obama Fried Chicken. I think the controversy has to do with the name, which, coincidentally, is also the name of our current president.
But President Obama doesn't own or have a copyright on the name Obama, does he? It seems like there'd have to be other people with the same name, meaning it could be used like any other word. I mean, we have Bush's Baked Beans. Which even though I couldn't stand George Bush I still ate.
The article said the O and A had been filled in, leaving it Bam Fried Chicken. But I say let it remain Obama Fried Chicken. There was a lot of cashing in on Obama after the election and especially around the Inauguration. If this place wants their restaurant to be called that, it seems like it'd be their business.

Obama Abroad
I'm not paying close attention to the news. But I see Obama is abroad, in Europe somewhere. Well, he met with the Queen, of course. As for anywhere else he may be, I don't know.
I don't really like watching the news that much. I don't like a lot of gratuitous criticism of him. And that's what we get every time they parade in all these Republican traitors. The guys and gals from the R side are such crooks, liars, and phonies that you can't believe anything out of their mouth. They're such hypocrites too, which, however true it is seems to be an insult that doesn't stick. They have the advantage of people's short memories. Also they have the advantage of politics normally stinking, so they stay somewhat below the radar because of that. But I'm remembering. They put us through the paces with that crook George Bush, but now they can't cut Obama any slack no matter what he does.
I saw a few of the pictures of Obama with the other world leaders. They must be glad to have him instead of that crook Bush. The German leader was threatening to walk out -- as I understand it. Maybe Obama wasn't fast enough with the neck rub. The other leaders. Whatever they're up to? Who knows? Sarkozy hasn't been the same since his phone conversation with Palin. So he's probably still mad being punked like that. (Real Sarkozy, fake Palin; I think it was the other way 'round.)
Speaking of Palin, how is it this dim bulb is still emitting a flicker of light in the public eye? And speaking of dim bulbs still emitting a flicker of light, Joe the Plumber is still out there. It seems he's ticked off real plumbers by parroting the conservative line of crap. Then when confronted about it he didn't even know what he was talking about. So maybe all is forgiven. It's weird relating to him, isn't it? He was an illustration during a debate. That's it. McCain exploited him for those moments. Now he's made a career out of it.
Bobby Jindal is praying no more volcanoes blow up. That's the news as I can remember.

Obama Makes Dow Rise 380 Points
Pretty good snark here, on giving President Obama the credit for today's 5.5% rise in the stock market.
I've always said, though, that if people are supposed to take the blame they should also get the credit. The problem with the Republicans is they only accept credit and never blame. Likewise, they only assign blame and never credit. So they must not think that others would appreciate what they themselves appreciate. Kind of the opposite of the Golden Rule when it comes to them.
Daily Kos diarist "reef the dog" calculates that with success like this, if Obama kept it up at the rate that he produced today, by the end of the first 100 days the Dow will be at 25,000. And by the end of his first term it should stand at 535,800!
So, assuming all this is correct, tomorrow would be a great day to BUY! On the other hand, when everyone is a billionaire it might cost $50,000 for a Big Mac and we'll still have the same (or worse) rich to poor differential.

That Little Girl
It was great seeing that little girl with Michelle Obama. How great both looked. Then when Michelle started hugging her, then the girl's mother, then all three together ... it was very touching. Michelle is nothing but class.
And I liked the letter she wrote to the Congress or President, telling them about her class, that "We are not quitters." That was great.
President Obama had an interesting word on dropping out of school, too, that people aren't just quitting themselves but their country. Very appropriate thing to say.

Obama And The Republicans
I hope Obama gets the Republicans by the scruff of the neck pretty soon and shakes them up good. I personally think it's a mistake to bend over backwards for these guys, because they're always right there to slit your throat if you show vulnerability. So if he's doing rope-a-dope, that's one thing, but if he's seriously trusting these hacks, that's another.
As far as the economy goes, it looks to me like the media wants to portray Obama as down for the count. For whatever reason. They seemed overly in love with him, maybe this is just the shadow side of that. They have to dump on him now. But we all have a vested interest in things getting better. And it sickens me that the Republicans, for their short term partisan interest, would root for the country to go down the tubes. People are actually suffering.
Myself, I am fed up to here, now and forever, with the Republicans. There will never be anything they can do or will do that will put them anywhere near my good graces again. Because I think that they, the Congressional types certainly, are up to no good now and forever. They are so ideologically driven that they simply can't do anything right. I think they're selling out the country and it's a terrible shame.
Look at their partisan record. Whatever damage Bush wanted to inflict, they were there to cheer him on. Then he's out of office and we hear they're essentially glad because they supposedly didn't like him very much. Could have fooled me.
I want Obama to succeed -- for his sake (minor point) but for all our sakes (major). It's ridiculous to want things to go sour just so you can swoop in years from now and ... actually cause more damage. That's the Republican agenda.

That Rubbish Called George W. Bush
Isn't it great to finally be rid of our National Joke, George W. Bush? Mr. Poking His Nose in Everyone's Business, Defaming and Trampling on the Constitution At Every Turn Bush?
I feel for President Obama, having still to deal with Human Scum (congressional Republicans), but everyone needs a devil. God made the actual devil, keeps him around. So apparently Republicans are going to be hard to exclude as well.
Yesterday it was reported that Obama had to tell these Wasteoids that he won the election and that things are going to happen with or without them. It's amazing to me that they think they can breeze in, having been crushed, and expect to continue with Bush's perverted policies.
As for the brush-cutting Bush, good for little else, I haven't heard much about him since his worthless speech the night of the Inauguration. And it'll be fine with me if it stays that way. We don't like you, we don't want you, stay gone.
We'll carry on with Obama, reversing some of Bush's ideological craziness and putting the Republicans in their place. Don't let them get you down. If you have to roll over them to govern in a common sense way, let 'em have it.

First to Know
I'm going to be "the first to know" who Sen. Obama chooses to be his running mate. True story.Barack Obama is about to make one of the most important decisions of this campaign -- choosing a running mate. This is going to be exciting, I hope. I'll be walking around with this knowledge and everyone will be going, "So who was it?" But of course I can keep a secret, so my lip's zipped.
You have helped build this movement from the bottom up, and Barack wants you to be the first to know his choice.
If I ever choose to reveal it to the world, please check back here because this is where I will post it, if I ever do.
Or, I guess -- and this won't be as fun for me -- you can click the link and also be the "first to know."

The Daily Snipe
Does it seem that the McCain campaign is doing nothing but sniping at every little thing? Each day when we get the news, it consists of the same thing: Obama has done or said something, and McCain criticizes it, whatever it is.
Whether it's how he finances his campaign, who his advisers are, what he says about terrorism, what he has for lunch -- it's something for McCain to gripe about, whine about, and to act offended over.
As for financing Obama's campaign, McCain's gripe is that Obama made some sort of 'solemn pledge' to tie one hand behind his back. The 'solemn pledge,' of course, was no such thing, and whatever it really was, it was all contingent on negotiations and certain understandings. But throughout the campaign thus far, McCain has mucked around with his financing to the point that whatever integrity it may have started out with (may have started out with), it's long gone, evaporated, floated away...McCain is simply trying to force parity in the money they have to spend. It's transparent and pathetic.
So McCain has to try to score points by acting offended, acting the aggrieved party to a 'solemn pledge,' i.e., just posturing and lying. (Haven't we had enough of liars for the last eight years? I know I have.)
The truth is Obama is going to get more contributions than McCain. But it's a lot of smaller contributions, which as far as I can tell is public financing. Duh.
I can't stand McCain -- that ought to be obvious. But he would be a lot more tolerable if he were running a positive campaign. Stick to the issues and quit the daily carping, the daily sniping.
